Sun-wind Cablepooling .

Connecting more and more renewable energy options to the grid with wind and solar power is already clogging up the power grid. And with it, it is putting a stop to new solar farms in particular. To prevent this grid congestion, there are several solutions. Solar-wind cable pooling is one of them, which is relatively easy to implement, especially for new wind and solar farms. But it is also possible with existing parks. In this area, Ecorus, together with Jeroen de Heer, director of wind turbine and solar farm Groetpolder, is carrying out one of the first large-scale solar-wind cable pooling projects in the Netherlands in the North Holland Groetpolder.

Creative solution

The initiative started in 1999 with the realization of 19 wind turbines. Later, 13 turbines were added. Then in 2020, after the amendment of the Electricity Act 1998 and Gas Act, which came into effect in July 2020, they looked at possibilities for solar energy. "That combination is very nice because you can now use the connections that are already there for the wind turbines also for the solar meadow. And we can now use the connection very efficiently," Jeroen de Heer indicated. Raphael Janssens, Technical Director Ecorus agrees; "Cable pooling of wind and solar is a very logical solution, but it depends on the overcapacity that you put down. Suppose you have a 20 MW connection, you want to make as much use of it as possible. If you put wind and solar power generation for more than 20 MWp on that connection, you automatically have overcapacity. With a lot of wind and sun, that means you have to switch off. That choice depends on the economic model: if you earn more from solar, you switch off wind, and vice versa."

Dynamic control

So much for the theory, the practice is a bit more unruly, because the hardest part is to do this as effectively as possible, Janssens explains. "We developed a scada system for this, which lets wind and solar generation communicate with each other. That didn't exist at all yet, although everyone is talking about it. We developed this ourselves with existing hardware components."

Cooperation Groetpolder

The example in the Groetpolder shows very well that new solar parks can still be realized with the existing 'copper' in the ground. After all, the demand for sustainable electricity is so great that we can provide a good answer with this innovative solution. "Moreover, we cannot put this responsibility in the shoes of the grid operators. Everyone has to do their part in the energy transition. And achieving this-more MWh on the existing grid-is our part as a developer and builder of solar farms," Janssens said.

Jeroen de Heer is delighted with Ecorus' cooperation and technical expertise. "Ecorus quickly came into the picture. Who was able to help us well in the process that we had no knowledge of but they did. When building a 20MW project you always run into problems. And here too, Ecorus has always been a great help. In this way we had a very good collaboration. And we were able to realize a very nice solar meadow in a very nice way." With the arrival of the solar meadow, the municipality of Hollands Kroon has added 44,712 solar panels. The solar meadow has a length of almost 4 kilometers.

Lower energy costs and CO2 reduction for ALDEL.
