Use of a drone for an optimal solar panel installation plan

Residents of a number of streets in Stadskanaal received a visit from a strange guest this week. For several hours, a drone carried out inspections of their roofs. The goal: measuring the roofs and mapping where there are skylights, drains or other obstacles. This allows you to determine exactly where and how many solar panels can be placed on the roof.

The client for the inspections is Ecorus, which is currently installing solar power installations on hundreds of roofs of homes in Stadskanaal on behalf of the Lefier housing association. The demand for solar panels is high, and that is why Ecorus wants to work as efficiently as possible. Proper preparation of the installation ensures less time on the roof and therefore less inconvenience for the residents. Moreover, more homes can be equipped with a solar power system in the same time.

More tenants provided with solar panels. Housing association Lefier is significantly increasing the number of roofs on which a solar power system will be installed this year to three thousand, partly due to high energy prices. “That is a big challenge,” says Wiebe Cazemier, area team manager of Lefier. “For us as a housing association, but also for our supplier Ecorus. We therefore choose to install as many solar panels as possible in streets and neighborhoods at the same time, and of course preferably on as many roofs as possible of one row of houses. Although tenants can decide for themselves whether they opt for solar panels and if so how many, in practice it appears that most tenants would like to have us install a solar power system.”

Faster For Ecorus, the major advantage of inspection with a drone is that the roofs are mapped much faster and more precisely. Based on often outdated satellite images, it is difficult to determine exactly how large the roof area is and whether there are any obstacles. Recent, sharp drone images make it possible to properly prepare for the installation of the panels.

Residents of the homes whose roofs the drone viewed were informed in advance about the inspection flights. The images taken will only be used to create an installation plan and will not appear online or be made available to third parties.
