Tornado proof sustainability in the Caribbean .
In 2019, Ecorus and partner SMA Sunbelt Energy built the 1st solar park on the volcanic island of Saba, including innovative battery storage. The 2MW solar park with 2.3MWh battery allows Saba to meet its total energy needs for up to 10 hours on sunny days. On sunny days, the island can fully power itself for about 10 hours without the use of diesel fuel. This saves a significant amount of fossil fuel that would otherwise have to be brought in by ship and avoids the associated CO2 emissions.
450 cubic meters of concrete were used in the construction of the substructure. The piles of the substructure are anchored in pre-drilled holes 2.5m deep. The solar park can withstand extreme Category 4 tropical storms.
